8vo. (8.5 x 5.5 inches). pp.x, 229. B/w illusts. Publisher's black cloth lettered in silver. Pictorial d/w, not price-clipped (30s), light stain to foot of backstrip, slightly marked, with trifle stains and marks to white paper of rear panel. Trifle splashes to top edge. Trifle light spotting to prelims (including portrait frontis) and extrems. O/w contents clean and bright. Binding firm and square. Signed by the author: gift inscription to front free endpaper: 'To Sir Bernard Fergusson / from a Temporary, 2nd Lieutenant, / National Service, acting / ex - A.D.C. / Michael Holroyd'. Bernard Edward Fergusson, Baron Ballantrae, KT, GCMG, GCVO, DSO, OBE (6 May 1911 Ð 28 November 1980) was a brigadier in the British Army, military historian and the last British-born Governor-General of New Zealand. He was centrally involved in the notorious court martial of Major Roy Farran, accused of the murder of Alexander Rubowitz in Jerusalem in 1947. At Farran's trial, Fergusson refused to testify on the grounds that he might incriminate himself. In 2004 British secret documents were released that included a statement by Fergusson, written at the time of the event, to the effect that Farran confessed to the murder to Fergusson, his superior officer (a detailed account of this can be found in David Cesarani's 'Major Farran's Hat: Murder, Scandal and Britain's War Against Jewish Terrorism 1945-1948).
