SALOMONS, VERA. Charles Eisen (XVIIIth Century French Book-Illustrators). With a Preface by Emile Bertaux. London: John & Edward Bumpus, 1914 / 1921. 1914. First edition. Limited edition. Hardcover 8vo. (9 x 6 inches). pp.195. 39 b/w photogravure plates. Publisher's moirŽ-effect red cloth gilt. Top edge gilt. Dealer's price and remarks in pencil to free endpaper. Endpapers browned. Some pages unopened. O/w contents clean and bright. Binding firm and square. No.52 of an edition limited to 100 copies printed on hand-made paper. Half-title present. Publisher's slip fixed to gutter opposite limitation page, explaining that the printed publishing date of 1914 could not be met, as war delayed the publication until 1921. Loosely inserted is a printed note from the publisher explaining the death of Bertaux: "The printing and issuing of this volume has been separated by a grim abyss-War- which has robbed me and hundreds of others of a very dear friend and a brilliantly able and clever man, who sacrificed his life for his country. Although over age for the Flying Corps, Emile Bertaux nobly volunteered for it and thus lost his life, leaving behind him a wife, who is bravely continuing the work, in the cause of art, that he was not permitted to finish. This preface is one of the last things he wrote before joining the Army. VS." Preface in French. A Very Good copy indeed. We are members of the P.B.F.A.
